Indoor Air Quality Testing in Singapore

The air in a closed, air-conditioned Singapore space can hold things you cannot see or smell: carbon dioxide that climbs as a room fills up, formaldehyde and other volatile compounds off-gassing from new furniture and finishes, fine dust, and mold spores that thrive in the humidity. The US EPA has noted that indoor pollutant levels can run several times higher than outdoors, and a sealed office or home rarely gives you any warning when they do.

Big Red Environmental runs a full indoor air quality (IAQ) diagnostic that puts numbers to what is actually in your air. We take calibrated instrument readings across your space and collect air and surface samples for our in-house lab, then hand you a written report that says what we found, where the levels sit, and what to do about it. It is measurement first, not guesswork.

What an IAQ test measures

An IAQ assessment covers the gases, particles, comfort conditions and microbial load in your indoor air. We test for:

• Gases: carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), formaldehyde (HCHO) and ozone (O3).
• Volatile organic compounds: total VOCs (TVOC), the vapors that come off paints, adhesives, cleaning products, new furniture and carpeting.
• Particulates: respirable suspended particulates (RSP) from roughly 0.75 to 10 microns, the fine dust that stays airborne and is easy to breathe in.
• Comfort conditions: relative humidity and temperature, plus air movement and airflow, which tell us how well a space is ventilated.
• Microbial load: total bacteria and fungal counts, with bacteria and mold speciation from air or swab sampling to identify what is actually growing.

Reading these together shows not just whether a space is stuffy, but why: too little fresh air, off-gassing from a recent fit-out, a humidity and mold problem, or a mix of all three.

How we run the assessment

A technician walks the space with you first to understand the complaint and the layout, then takes instrument readings at the points that matter. We use dedicated equipment for each parameter: an IAQ gas monitor for CO2, humidity and temperature, a toxic gas monitor with CO and ozone sensors, a photo-acoustic sensor for formaldehyde, an anemometer for airflow, a portable dust monitor for particulates, and a portable photo-ionization detection system for TVOC.

For the microbial side, we draw a measured volume of air through an Andersen single-stage air sampler and take swab or contact-plate samples from surfaces where growth is suspected. Those samples are cultured and analyzed so we can name the bacteria and mold species present, not just report that something is there. You receive a written report with the measured levels, how they compare against recognized indoor guidelines, and clear recommendations for the next step.

In-house lab and spore speciation

What sets our IAQ work apart is the lab behind it. Big Red is one of the only providers in Singapore able to analyze viable spores from air, bulk, dust, swab and Rodac contact plates locally and in-house, through fungal culture analysis. Because the samples do not have to travel, we keep the chain short and the turnaround tight, and we can identify the specific organisms rather than give a generic count.

That matters when a result drives a decision. Knowing which mold species is present, and at what concentration relative to the outdoor baseline, tells you whether you are looking at normal background levels or an active indoor source that needs remediation.

When you need an IAQ test

An IAQ test is worth doing whenever the air in a space is in question and you want facts before you act. Common triggers include:

• Recurring complaints in an office or building. When occupants report that a floor feels stuffy or stale (the pattern often labeled sick building syndrome), testing shows whether CO2, VOCs, particulates or ventilation are behind it.
• A new fit-out or new furniture. Fresh paint, adhesives, carpeting and cabinetry release VOCs and formaldehyde for weeks. Testing tells you when levels have settled.
• A musty smell or visible mold. High humidity and fungal counts point to a moisture and mold problem that a walkthrough alone can miss.
• After water damage. Once a leak or flood has been dried, an air and surface check confirms whether spore levels have returned to normal.
• Before and after remediation. A baseline test and a clearance test prove that duct cleaning, mold removal or disinfection actually moved the numbers.
• Routine monitoring. Facilities, hotels, clinics and childcare centers use periodic testing to keep a healthy indoor environment on record.
